In today’s society, Black men and women are facing a mental health crisis! THE BLACK MAN is a one man play that delves into the “why Black men do what they do.” This Tri-Wen Production shines a spotlight on the complexities that Black men face as fathers, employees, husbands and ordinary members of society. As the play evolves, we explore the lives of the good guy, the business man, the down low guy, the hustler/playa, the church guy and the athlete. They all seek guidance from a therapist to figure out, why Black men do what they do. Slavery, red-lining, drugs, accessing government assistance as providers for our Black women and children, are different mechanisms that systemic racism has created. These are some of the catalysts for creating visual division between Black men and women, resulting in successful coping mechanisms failing, poor communication and ineffective decisions and behavior that result in the Black man feeling confused, vulnerable, anxious, afraid, angry, guilty, hopeless and helpless. We aim to inspire and normalize conversations around mental health in a culturally creative way, engage in transparent Q&A, and be the catalyst for active social change. You don’t want to miss experiencing THE BLACK MAN!
